About Us
The office of Commissioner of the Revenue was created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1786. Commissioners are constitutional officers who are elected to 4 year terms by the citizens of their locality. They are the chief tax assessing officers in Virginia's cities and counties. The current Colonial Heights Commissioner of the Revenue, Danny Bowles, was elected in November 2025 and took office on January 1, 2026. He and his staff administer the assessments for businesses and individuals based on State and Local code as adopted by the Virginia General Assembly and by the Colonial Heights City Council. In the City of Colonial Heights, the Commissioner of the Revenue is not responsible for real estate assessments. For information related to real estate values, please contact the City Real Estate Assessor.
Mr. Bowles graduated from Averett University (Danville, VA) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 2002.
Prior to being elected as the Colonial Heights Commissioner of the Revenue, Mr. Bowles worked in the banking industry for over 23 years. From 2019-2021, he served as the President of the Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce (now SOVA Chamber). Mr. Bowles is an avid sports fan. He enjoys following the Denver Broncos and Richmond Spiders basketball and football, and spending time at Shepherd Stadium watching the Tri-City Chili Peppers. Mr. Bowles and his wife Jessica have two children, one of which has graduated from Colonial Heights Public Schools.
